If you’re considering a trip to New Orleans for NOACNA XVI, there’s a pretty strong case for giving yourself a little extra time.
The 16th New Orleans Area Convention of Narcotics Anonymous is scheduled for July 8–11, 2027, at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. Pre-registration is currently available through the convention’s official website.
And this is one of those convention locations where the destination can easily become part of the trip.
The hotel sits along the Mississippi River in downtown New Orleans, near the Riverwalk and within easy reach of the French Quarter, museums, restaurants, historic neighborhoods and the city’s riverfront.

You’re Already in the Middle of New Orleans
One of the advantages of NOACNA XVI is that you don’t have to travel far from the convention hotel to experience the city.
The Hilton New Orleans Riverside is located at 2 Poydras Street. The hotel lists the Riverwalk at about 0.2 mile away, the National WWII Museum at about half a mile, and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center about a mile away. It also has convenient access to New Orleans streetcar lines.
That means even if your convention schedule is packed, you can still get outside for an hour or two without sacrificing half the day getting across town.
Start With the Mississippi Riverfront
If you only have a short break between convention activities, the riverfront is probably the easiest place to start.
The Mississippi River is one of the defining features of New Orleans, and the downtown riverfront includes walking areas, public spaces and views of river traffic. Woldenberg Park runs along the river near the French Quarter and is a simple place to walk, sit for a while or get some fresh air before heading back to the convention.
You don’t necessarily need an attraction or a ticket.
Sometimes an hour outside, a walk along the river and a change of scenery is all you need before the next meeting or speaker.
Spend a Few Hours in the French Quarter
For many first-time visitors, the obvious destination is the French Quarter.
New Orleans’ oldest neighborhood is highly walkable, with historic architecture, shops, museums, restaurants, street performers and landmarks concentrated into a relatively small area. Jackson Square anchors much of the historic center, with St. Louis Cathedral, the Cabildo and the Presbytère all nearby.
You don’t have to make Bourbon Street the focus of a New Orleans trip.
For a recovery-centered weekend, there is plenty to experience through the Quarter’s architecture, food, history, music, museums and public spaces without building the day around nightlife.
A simple outing might be:
Walk through Jackson Square, wander along Royal Street, explore a museum or gallery, grab something to eat and then make your way back toward the river.
That can easily fit into a free afternoon.
Walk Through the French Market District
Another easy addition is the French Market District.
The district stretches for several blocks along the edge of the French Quarter and includes the historic market, shops, food, local artisans and access to the riverfront. New Orleans’ official tourism organization describes it as a six-block district extending from Jackson Square toward the Old U.S. Mint.
This is a good option when you want to experience New Orleans without committing to a major attraction or a rigid schedule.
Walk around, eat something you wouldn’t normally get at home, browse for a while and head back when you’re ready.
Give the National WWII Museum Half a Day
If you arrive early or stay after the convention, the National WWII Museum is another major option near the hotel.
The Hilton places the museum at roughly half a mile from the property, and New Orleans’ tourism organization includes it among the city’s major attractions.
This is probably better saved for a larger block of free time rather than trying to squeeze it between convention sessions.
If you have half a day available, though, it gives you a substantial indoor activity during a New Orleans July, when stepping into some air conditioning may sound pretty good.
Ride a New Orleans Streetcar
You also don’t have to experience the city entirely on foot.
New Orleans’ historic streetcars are part transportation and part sightseeing. The city’s official visitor guide recommends a streetcar ride as one of the classic experiences for a first-time visitor, and the convention hotel notes that streetcar lines are accessible from its downtown location.
That makes it possible to see a little more of New Orleans without renting a car or spending your free time navigating parking.
If your schedule gives you a couple of hours, simply riding through a different part of the city can be part of the experience.
Save Some Time for the Food
New Orleans is one of those cities where eating can legitimately count as sightseeing.
You don’t need an elaborate list of “must-visit” restaurants. Part of the fun is simply getting away from the convention hotel for a meal and trying something local.
The French Quarter alone has everything from casual counter-service stops to long-established New Orleans restaurants, and you’ll find plenty of additional options downtown and along the riverfront.
If you’re traveling with other members, dinner can become part of the fellowship of the weekend: a few people decide to go eat, somebody else comes along, and suddenly you’re exploring New Orleans with people you may not have known before the convention.
If You Only Have a Few Hours
You don’t need to turn convention weekend into a sightseeing marathon.
One free hour:
Walk the Mississippi Riverfront or Riverwalk area.
Two or three hours:
Head into the French Quarter, Jackson Square and the French Market area.
Half a day:
Visit the National WWII Museum or take a longer trip through the Quarter and another neighborhood.
An extra day:
Give yourself permission to explore New Orleans without watching the clock and then head home after the convention.
The point isn’t to see everything.
It’s to take advantage of the fact that recovery has brought you somewhere worth experiencing.
Consider Adding a Day to Either Side
NOACNA XVI begins Thursday, July 8 and runs through Sunday, July 11.
That makes a simple extended trip pretty easy to imagine:
Wednesday, July 7: Arrive, check in and explore the riverfront.
Thursday, July 8: Spend part of the day seeing New Orleans before convention activities begin.
July 8–11: Make NOACNA XVI the center of the trip.
Monday, July 12: Add a final sightseeing day before heading home.
Or do the reverse and arrive several days early.
Either way, putting the sightseeing mostly outside the convention schedule means you don’t have to choose between experiencing the city and participating fully in the event.
Make Recovery the Reason for the Trip
