ECCNA 42 Valletta, Malta, July 23–25, 2027: While You're in Town NA Travel Guide

The 42nd European Conference and Convention of Narcotics Anonymous (ECCNA 42) is coming to Valletta, Malta, July 23–25, 2027. Hosted by NA Malta, the convention will take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Old Hospital Street, Valletta, overlooking the historic Grand Harbour. The official convention theme is TAMA/HOPE. NA Malta

This is one of those convention destinations where adding a little extra time to the trip can make a big difference. Valletta is compact, historic and surrounded by water, while ferries and buses put the Three Cities, Sliema and other parts of Malta within relatively easy reach.

ECCNA 42 also has something unusual going for it: NA Malta has already announced several official activities associated with the convention, beginning the day before the main event. That gives travelers a natural reason to arrive early rather than treating Malta as a simple Friday-to-Sunday trip. NA Malta

Consider Arriving by Thursday

The official ECCNA 42 program currently includes a Grand Harbour boat trip on Thursday, July 22, before the convention begins. On Friday and Saturday, the organizers also list rooftop dinners on the Grand Harbour Terrace and separate NA parties on both evenings. NA Malta

That matters from a travel-planning perspective.

Instead of arriving late Friday and immediately rushing into convention weekend, a Thursday arrival could give you time to settle into Malta, experience the harbour with other members and start the trip at a more relaxed pace.

The currently listed associated ECCNA activities are:

  • Thursday, July 22: Grand Harbour boat trip
  • Friday, July 23: Rooftop dinner at the Mediterranean Conference Centre and NA party
  • Saturday, July 24: Rooftop dinner at the Mediterranean Conference Centre and NA party

These are official ECCNA 42 companion activities, but schedules and details can change before July 2027. Check NA Malta's official ECCNA page when planning your trip. NA Malta

Getting to Valletta

Most international visitors will arrive through Malta International Airport, the country's primary commercial airport.

Malta is small enough that airport-to-city transfers are much shorter than they are in many major convention destinations. VisitMalta emphasizes the island's short transfer distances, while Malta Public Transport operates airport-oriented bus connections and a network serving Valletta and other major visitor areas. Visit Malta

For a Valletta-focused convention trip, renting a car is not automatically necessary. In fact, the city's narrow streets, limited space and extensive bus and ferry connections can make public transportation, taxis or rideshare-style services more convenient for many visitors.

If you're continuing around Malta after the convention, a car can become more useful depending on where you want to go.

Valletta Is Built for Exploring on Foot

One of the best things about ECCNA 42's location is that the convention itself puts you inside one of Malta's major historic destinations.

Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage city filled with limestone buildings, fortifications, churches, narrow streets, balconies, public squares and dramatic views over the surrounding harbours. VisitMalta highlights Valletta among the islands' major historical and cultural destinations. Visit Malta

The Mediterranean Conference Centre sits on the eastern side of the peninsula near Fort St. Elmo and the Grand Harbour. That makes it possible to explore portions of Valletta before or after convention sessions without arranging a separate excursion.

For a simple outing, just start walking.

You can wander through the streets toward the center of Valletta, stop for coffee or food, see the honey-colored architecture and return when you're ready.

Walk to the Upper Barrakka Gardens

One of the best places to understand Valletta's geography is the Upper Barrakka Gardens, overlooking the Grand Harbour and the fortified cities across the water.

From here, the harbour itself becomes part of the scenery: fortifications, ships, waterfronts and the Three Cities spread out below.

The gardens work especially well for a convention trip because they don't require a full sightseeing day. They can be part of a walk through Valletta rather than a destination that needs its own itinerary.

And once you've seen the Grand Harbour from above, ECCNA's Thursday harbour trip has a little more context.

Cross the Harbour to the Three Cities

If you have a few open hours, consider taking the ferry from Valletta across the Grand Harbour.

Malta Public Transport's Valletta Ferry connects Valletta with Cospicua, providing access to the historic Three Cities area, and also operates a separate route connecting Valletta with Sliema. Malta Public Transport

The Three Cities—Vittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea and Cospicua—offer another side of Malta's fortified harbour landscape.

This is one of the easiest ways to make the trip feel substantially bigger without traveling very far. You get the ferry ride, another historic area and excellent views back toward Valletta, all within the same general harbour.

Visit St. John's Co-Cathedral

For a major cultural stop inside Valletta, St. John's Co-Cathedral is one of Malta's signature historic sites.

VisitMalta highlights the cathedral not only for its elaborate interior but also for its connection to Caravaggio—the cathedral houses The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, identified by Malta's tourism authority as the only signed painting by the artist. Visit Malta

If museums and historic buildings interest you, this is one attraction worth setting aside some time for rather than merely walking past.

Check current opening hours closer to July 2027, particularly if you're trying to fit the visit around convention programming.

Eat Maltese Food While You're Here

Malta has its own food traditions, influenced by its Mediterranean geography and centuries of cultural exchange.

A convention trip is a good excuse to try local staples such as pastizzi, savory pastries commonly filled with ricotta or peas, along with Maltese bread, seafood, rabbit dishes and other local specialties.

Valletta makes this especially easy because restaurants, cafés and bakeries are concentrated throughout the city. VisitMalta presents gastronomy and local produce as major parts of the Maltese visitor experience. Visit Malta

You don't need to build a separate food tour into the weekend. Try Maltese dishes where you're already exploring and let meals become part of the trip.

Prepare for Serious July Heat

July in Malta is hot, bright and dry.

Malta International Airport's meteorological records put the historical July normal maximum around 31.6°C, roughly 89°F, and individual July periods can run considerably hotter. Long stretches of sunshine are normal as well. Malta Airport

That makes heat management part of the travel plan.

Bring light clothing, sunscreen, a hat and water. If you're walking Valletta's steep streets during the middle of the day, slow the pace and take advantage of indoor stops.

Convention sessions may actually provide a welcome break from afternoon sightseeing.

For longer outings, mornings and later afternoons can be much more comfortable than trying to cover large sections of the island at midday.

Take Advantage of Malta's Ferries and Buses

You can see quite a bit of Malta without a rental car.

The public transport network covers Malta and Gozo, while ferry services connect Valletta with Sliema and the Three Cities. Malta Public Transport also operates connections serving major visitor destinations throughout the islands. Malta Public Transport

For ECCNA weekend itself, staying relatively close to Valletta can keep things simple.

If you're extending the trip, public transport can then take you farther afield without requiring you to navigate unfamiliar roads immediately after arriving.

If You Have an Extra Day, See Mdina

If you're staying beyond convention weekend, Mdina is an easy candidate for an extra-day outing.

The fortified former capital sits inland, dramatically different from harbour-side Valletta. Narrow stone streets, historic buildings and elevated views give it a quieter atmosphere.

VisitMalta specifically groups Valletta, Mdina and the Three Cities among Malta's standout historic destinations. Visit Malta

Because Mdina is away from ECCNA's immediate convention area, it makes more sense as a before-or-after trip than something squeezed into a short convention break.

Or Extend the Trip to Gozo

Travelers coming from North America or elsewhere in Europe may decide that flying to Malta for only a few days doesn't make much sense.

In that case, Gozo can become part of the larger trip.

VisitMalta describes Malta's sister island as a greener, quieter complement to the main island, with historic sites, coastline, outdoor activities and its own food traditions. Visit Malta

Gozo deserves more than a rushed couple of hours. If it interests you, consider adding a night or two after ECCNA rather than forcing it into the main convention weekend.

Let the Official Activities Do Some of the Planning for You

One reason ECCNA 42 works especially well as a travel convention is that you don't necessarily need to create every experience yourself.

The convention organizers are already using the destination.

The official Thursday Grand Harbour boat trip puts attendees on the water before the convention begins. The Friday and Saturday rooftop dinners take place overlooking the Grand Harbour at the Mediterranean Conference Centre itself. And the evening NA parties give members another way to spend time together without leaving the convention environment. NA Malta

That leaves you free to use the rest of your sightseeing time selectively.

Pick one or two experiences that matter to you—perhaps Valletta itself, the Three Cities, Mdina or an extra day in Gozo—and leave enough room for the reason you're coming in the first place.

Recovery, fellowship and travel can fit together without turning the weekend into a race.
