CALCNA VI: Things to Do in Los Cabos

Heading to Los Cabos for CALCNA VI? A little extra time before or after the convention can turn the trip into a chance to explore Baja California Sur’s coastline, browse art galleries, or share a meal overlooking the water.

The trick is understanding the geography before filling your itinerary. Los Cabos includes two distinct towns—Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo—connected by approximately 20 miles of coastal highway known as the Tourist Corridor. Choose outings near your base during the convention, and save the longer excursions for an extra day.

For current convention information, visit the official CALCNA website.

First, get to know the two Cabos

Cabo San Lucas is the place to start for the marina, boat excursions, and the famous rock formation known as El Arco. If your ideal afternoon involves being near the water, this is a useful area to explore.

San José del Cabo offers a different kind of outing: galleries, art, and an evening spent exploring the Gallery District. It makes a good counterpoint to a waterfront day in Cabo San Lucas.

The Tourist Corridor connects the two towns and includes beaches and resort properties along the coast. Check actual driving routes when planning your day; two places described as being “in Los Cabos” may be well apart.

See El Arco from the water

El Arco is one of the destination’s most recognizable sights: a natural stone arch at the end of the peninsula. Boat excursions depart from the Cabo San Lucas marina and Médano Beach to see it up close.

For a convention trip, consider a straightforward sightseeing excursion. Ask about the full duration, departure point, and return time before choosing one, and leave a comfortable buffer before your next convention commitment.

If you prefer a quieter experience, ask the operator about the atmosphere on board as well as the route. That helps you choose an outing that suits your group.

Pick a beach with your plans in mind

A beautiful shoreline does not automatically mean a suitable swimming beach. Some Los Cabos beaches have strong surf, currents, or undertows, so choose your destination based on whether you want to swim, explore, or simply enjoy the view.

A few places to investigate:

  • Médano Beach: A convenient beach option to combine with time in Cabo San Lucas.

  • Chileno Beach: A Tourist Corridor option known for swimming and snorkeling.

  • Santa María Beach: A sheltered cove along the corridor, with snorkeling among its attractions.

Conditions still matter at each location. Follow posted flags and local guidance on the day you visit.

For a short break, choose one beach and enjoy it. There is no need to spend the afternoon moving between several stops.

Explore San José del Cabo’s Gallery District

If you enjoy art and wandering at your own pace, set aside time for San José del Cabo’s Gallery District.

The tourism board describes a seasonal Thursday evening Art Walk from November through June, traditionally running from 5 to 9 p.m. Check the current schedule before building your evening around it. If it fits your travel dates, it could be a good reason to arrive a day early.

Allow time for dinner, a few galleries, and an unhurried look around. You do not need to turn the evening into a checklist.

Leave room for a meal together

A shared meal can be the easiest outing to arrange around a convention. Cabo San Lucas has seafood restaurants and waterfront dining options, while the broader destination offers everything from tacos and coffee shops to farm-to-table restaurants.

Pick an area you already plan to visit, check menus and opening hours, and keep the return trip in mind. For a larger group, ask ahead about seating rather than counting on everyone finding a table together.

Plan transportation before arrival

Los Cabos International Airport uses the code SJD. Ground transportation options include authorized taxis, private transfers, and rental cars. The Ruta del Desierto bus also connects points between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

For a convention-centered visit, start by mapping three places: your arrival airport, where you are staying, and the convention venue. Then decide whether your sightseeing plans justify a rental car or whether arranged transportation will cover what you need.

Before arrival, confirm your pickup instructions and destination address. For outings, plan the return journey alongside the outward trip.

Build a little breathing room into the trip

You can enjoy Los Cabos without filling every open hour. A simple approach is to choose one main outing:

  • A waterfront afternoon: Explore the Cabo San Lucas marina area and take an El Arco sightseeing trip.

  • An art-focused evening: Browse San José del Cabo’s Gallery District and have dinner nearby.

  • A beach morning: Choose a suitable beach, check conditions, and leave time to get back without rushing.

If you stay an extra night, use it for the outing that would otherwise feel squeezed into convention weekend. Sometimes the best addition is simply enough time to enjoy where you are.
